BDVA Publishes Landmark White Paper on Synthetic Data in Healthcare

Brussels, 11 September 2025The Big Data Value Association (BDVA) Healthcare Task Force has released a comprehensive white paper on the transformative role of synthetic data in healthcare. Yalın Yalıç, from the project partners at TIGA Healthcare Technologies, contributed as a co-author, while Furkan Çiftçi supported the process through coordination efforts. The paper outlines how synthetic data can unlock secure access to medical information, accelerate AI development, and enable more inclusive, privacy-preserving research and care.

The report identifies eight domains of innovation, including virtual patients, clinical trial optimisation, bias mitigation, and workforce training. It also addresses persistent challenges such as regulatory uncertainties, lack of benchmarking standards, and gaps in infrastructure.

To overcome these barriers, the white paper proposes coordinated actions across governance, regulation, and funding. Recommendations include establishing shared benchmarks and sandboxes, clarifying legal frameworks, and investing in federated learning ecosystems.

European programmes such as Horizon Europe – where AISYM4MED is featured – together with EU4Health and Digital Europe, are highlighted as key enablers to ensure that Europe leads in building future-ready digital health systems.
