AISYM4MED at the 2025 Invicta Spring School

For the second consecutive year, Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS participated in the Invicta Spring School in collaboration with the AISYM4MED project. This leading event, held in Porto, brought together a diverse group of students, researchers, and professionals to explore the latest advances in artificial intelligence—particularly its responsible and impactful application in healthcare.

The programme featured several contributions from Fraunhofer AICOS researchers. Inês Sousa, Head of Intelligent Systems, participated in a roundtable on Responsible AI, where she shared insights into the ethical challenges and societal responsibilities that come with integrating AI into clinical contexts.

Luís Rosado took the stage to present AISYM4MED, a Horizon Europe-funded project focused on creating a trustworthy AI framework for medical data analysis. His presentation outlined the project’s goals, methodologies, and impact, underscoring the importance of privacy, transparency, and robustness in AI development for healthcare.

Later, Luís was joined by researcher Ivo Saavedra for an engaging case study session exploring real-world applications of AI in healthcare. Together, they led an in-depth workshop titled “Generating Synthetic Retinal Fundus Images with Diffusion Models”, where they introduced participants to the concept of synthetic medical data generation. Central to the session was a demonstration of pyMDMA, an open-source library developed under AISYM4MED, designed to support privacy-friendly innovation in medical imaging.

AISYM4MED’s presence at the Invicta Spring School offered an invaluable fora for meaningful exchange, hands-on learning, and inspiring collaboration among Europe’s next generation of AI and healthcare innovators.
