After four years of research and collaboration, the AISym4MED project will hold its Final Event, “Trustworthy AI for Healthcare: From Research to Policy,” on 15 October 2026 at TownHall Europe in Brussels.
The event will bring together researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, legal and ethical experts, and representatives of the European AI ecosystem to explore how advances in artificial intelligence and health data can move from research towards responsible implementation in healthcare.
At its core, AISym4MED addresses a major challenge for healthcare AI: enabling the use of high-quality health data for research and AI development while protecting privacy and supporting trustworthy, clinically meaningful applications. Over the past four years, the project has developed a platform bringing together synthetic data generation, federated technologies, privacy-preserving mechanisms, and data and model auditing, with its solutions validated through clinical use cases.
The Final Event will provide an opportunity to present these results while opening a broader multidisciplinary discussion around the conditions needed for trustworthy AI development and adoption in healthcare.
A European perspective on trustworthy AI in healthcare
The event will open with remarks from Marilia Barandas, AISym4MED Project Coordinator at Fraunhofer Portugal, and Nihal Yildirim, Project Officer at the European Commission HaDEA, setting the scene for a day focused on the development and responsible uptake of AI in healthcare.
The opening will be followed by a keynote from Anca Scortariu, Deputy Head of Unit for AI in Health and Life Sciences at the European AI Office, European Commission, addressing “Trustworthy AI in healthcare.” The keynote will provide a European perspective on the conditions needed to advance AI adoption in health and connect innovation with broader developments in the European AI ecosystem.
From AISym4MED research to clinical application
The morning programme will put the project’s research into practice through the session “Validating AISym4MED Through a Clinical Use Case,” presented by César Gálvez-Barrón, Clinical Researcher and Geriatrician at CSAPG.
Participants will also have the opportunity to gain a closer understanding of the AISym4MED solutions and platform, with Esther Albertín Marco, Product Innovation – Health & Critical Sectors at Nunsys Group-Inycom, presenting an overview of the technological solutions developed within the project.
Together, these sessions will illustrate how the project’s technological components can support secure and collaborative medical AI research and how they have been applied and evaluated in a clinical context.
Building clinically meaningful AI
In the afternoon, the event will bring together experts for the roundtable “Building Clinically Meaningful AI: Legal and Ethical Challenges Around Data, Evidence and Accountability.”
Developing AI for healthcare involves navigating complex and sometimes competing requirements around data protection, data minimisation, representativeness, bias, clinical evidence, patient safety and accountability. At the same time, privacy-preserving approaches such as synthetic data, federated learning and secure processing environments introduce important considerations around data utility, validation and reproducibility.
Moderated by Nayana Murali, Attorney-at-Law at Timelex, the discussion will bring together Irene Heijink (UMC Utrecht), Meeri Haataja (Saidot), Milana Trucl (Sciensano), Paul Quinn (VUB) and Roxana Albu (Sciensano).
Drawing on their different areas of expertise, the roundtable will explore the practical judgements and trade-offs involved in developing clinically meaningful AI, including tensions between data access and data protection, privacy-preserving approaches and clinical utility, and the need for robust evidence, fairness, accountability and effective governance.
Join us in Brussels
The AISym4MED Final Event is designed not only as the conclusion of four years of research, but as an opportunity to connect research, clinical practice and the wider European AI ecosystem and discuss the future development and uptake of trustworthy AI in healthcare.
The event is open to stakeholders interested in healthcare AI, health data, clinical research, privacy-preserving technologies, responsible AI and digital health.
